Leaning slightly into Cameron, Elizabeth rested her left arm and hand upon his and gazed at the water as she listened to their surroundings.

"My legs hurt but I believe all that is wrong is deep bruises. I should be able to get to the hut with a little support but tomorrow will be rough."

Turning her gaze to his face, her eyes twinkled with how she felt for him with a slight showing of pain behind it.

"I do not want to lose you, please do not go after him alone again."

Leaning up she kissed his cheek then shifted slightly to try to grab her shirt and pants that lay behind them.

Leo and Liz did what Leo thought the others on the island would not suspect, instead of turning back to try to come at them again they kept going deeper and deeper into the island until eventually they came to the opposite side from where they landed. The beach here was slightly different than the beach on the other side, the water here was very still and quite a bit deeper at parts. The water was so still and clear that Leo could see that the fish life here was very abundant and he and Liz spent most of a day crafting a spear they hoped would help them catch some of them. It was nice relaxing in such a way after the long journey across the island and Leo found that he quite enjoyed Liz's company. She might have been young but she was intelligent and had a strength about her.

They decided they would stay here for a while and hope the others did not find them, the fish were plentiful if they could learn how to catch them and there was a small stream not too far away where they could get water..though it was not as if they would need more than the rainwater. As far as they could tell it rained everyday and every night on the island, it was not a constant thing but it had rained on and off the entire time they had been here. It made drinkable water very easy to get, but it also made it obvious that they would need some kind of a shelter to survive.

Leo was hesitant to build anything too elaborate because if the others found them they would certainly have to abandon it....and besides, he had no idea how to go about building a shelter. As it turned out it was Liz who knew what to do, she said she had read all about it in one of her favorite books and after a few times explaining it to him Leo finally understood. They found a suitable tree stump that was the right height and thick enough. Then they went about gathering large tree branches, which would be crisscrossed with each other to form the walls of the shelter. Once they got those in the ground and secure they then draped large leaf filled branches over the top.

It took them an entire day just to do it, and it would be cramped inside, but it was sturdy and it would keep them dry.

Tired from the long day of work they both crawled in and quickly fell asleep in each others arms.

The others seemed content to leave him and Liz alone on their beach for the time being, Leo suspected that the wounds he had seen on several of them were taking the full time care of the others. It would probably have been a perfect time to strike while they were so weakened...but Leo did not think that Liz was ready for such a thing. Instead they spent their days training long and hard and their nights cuddled up together in the shelter. The training was not what one might expect and it actually went both ways as she taught Leo all she knew about survival in an environment like what they were in and Leo taught her how to get into the mindset of killing something.

Her mindset was the problem he learned early on, there was no way he could train her to be as strong as those they would face or as fast...but she didn't have to be. In their eyes she was just a little girl who was frightened and confused, she could use that with deadly effectiveness. The plan they were working on was simple really, though Leo hoped the others would not suspect it. They had to separate them first, or more accurately watch them closely and make their move when one of them separated. Once they had one alone then Leo would take their attention, have them focus on him...and that was when Liz would strike.

The problem was, Leo was still not certain that Liz would be able to kill when the time came. She said she wanted to, and he believed her, but killing was not something that was easy...because it shouldn't be. They had to kill though, or they were going to be killed, so he had to make sure Liz would be ready. To help prepare her Leo was making her kill animals, they started with fish and she had an easy enough time with that but when Leo captured a small mammal Liz at first just couldn't do it. It took her a whole two days to work up the nerve to kill the first one, but once she had done it she killed the next few with less and less hesitation. It wasn't the same as killing a person.....but they were getting there.

It had not been that hard to find them, like Leo thought they would the other group was using the already constructed shelter that had been made by the island's inhabitant. It made sense for them to use it, and it also made sense that they were sleeping in shifts as soon became evident when Leo and Liz went in for a closer look. They were being careful, but they could only be careful for so long and Leo could be patient.

Sooner or later they would get one of them on their own, and then they would see if Liz was ready......

Leo and Liz watched them on and off for the next several days, never letting themselves be seen and always making their way back to their own shelter for rest. The group was being careful, very careful, and they stayed inside the hut more often than not. When they did venture out it was always in large groups of at least half of their number. They even slept in shifts, one or two people just outside the doorway keeping watch while the rest of them slept. The group didn’t seem to be looking for him and Liz, which Leo found odd until he realized they were probably just waiting until all their wounds healed and they were at full strength. Several of them had rather extensive wounds he knew, Leo hoped that infection would set in and kill those ones for him but he doubted he would get that lucky.

Out of all the things Leo and Liz had witnessed while watching the group so far the thing that disturbed him the most was that Alex seemed to be one of them. She kept watch sometimes at night, she lived with them and never ventured out on her own. Leo would not believe that she really one of them, the woman had made a strong impression on him and he just could not believe she would try to kill him or Liz….but she also was making no attempt to come and find them.

Perhaps Alex thought they were long gone and avoiding her, maybe if she knew they were nearby she would come back to them. Leo wanted to give her the chance, Liz was great company but she could use a good female role model to be around and Leo could use the company of a grown woman….a rather beautiful and alluring grown woman at that. Leo decided that the next time he saw Alex on nighttime watch that he would try to contact her. Leo decided that the best way to do this would simply be to step from the jungle and let her see him.

The chance came the very next night when Leo and Liz saw that it was Alex on watch and she was even by herself. Liz thought it was a bad idea but Leo was determined, he wanted Alex back with them. Telling Liz to remain hidden Leo crept closer to the hut than they had dared before and then stood out in the open. He was trying to make it so he was just on the edge of Alex’s vision, where when the moon shone just right she would be able to see him but anyone who was in the hut looking out wouldn’t be able to.

Leo wasn’t an expert in judging such things but he did the best he could, now he just had to wait and see what Alex would do.

She had grown accustom to taking her turn at the late night watch, not only used to it but as the days and weeks had passed since her assisted escape, she had actually grown to like it. The biggest distress was the nights it did not just shower but poured rain upon the island, those nights had not be as pleasant but so many nights it would only lightly sprinkle as if fairy drops from the heavens. Those nights, or ones like tonight when the moon glowed brightly upon the landscape, Alex found this her favorite time.

The island was so different in the night then during the day. Night creatures called into the darkness and the dark brought a peace upon the land. Of course, Alex knew it was a false peace for there were many dangerous nocturnal creatures that slithered and crawled through the shadows but the area where she perched for her watch was one she knew well and felt safe.

Many nights as her eyes swept through the shadows, her ears trained to listen for those sounds that were unusual to the norm, her mind had wandered to thoughts of the little girl.......and Leo. Even yet, a shudder of dread and fear gripped her when her thoughts went back to the day as she thrashed through the forest, making her escape from his madness. The visions of his vicious, striking blows, killing in an animal like frenzy churned her stomach.

Cameron, herself and the others had always kept hope they would come upon signs that the little child was still alive but nothing had ever been found. Yet she took a deep satisfaction that the child's dead body had never been discovered either.

Alex shifted her weight from one hip to the other, tucking her heel back beneath her thigh, a move she did occasionally to keep circulation during her long watch shift. As she straightened her back, the soft night breeze blew her hair across her cheek and the motion caused her eyes to catch sight of something, something that had moved into the light of the moon.

Her body froze instinctively and only her eyes traveled that direction so as not to alert whatever was on the perimeter. Yet what she saw caused her heart to jerk and she fought the gasp of breath as her mind screamed an alert.

Her mind raced as she realized Leo now stood so near the hut where the others slept. And her mind seemed frozen for that brief moment, her eyes looking upon the man that stood within the moonlight. It looked like the Leo of old but quickly her mind slammed caution into place as memories of his brutality was thrust to the forefront of thoughts.

That quiet moment where they both just seemed to sit there staring at one another, assessing each others intentions and trying to gauge what would be the other's reactions was quickly broken as Alex leap to her feet, the large can and stick she used as an alarm snatched up as she did so and she frantically began beating it in a frenzy to alert the others they were in danger.

The weeks after their respective injuries had allowed them time to heal. Cameron had avoided going out to hunt Leo even though he knew the man was psychotic and had the only child with him. Once he had healed, however, he had once again begun his practicing, though this time in an obscure location where none could observe him. To do this, he was often gone for hours at a time, to the point where Elizabeth often asked him what he was doing. He told her the truth, near enough. He was practicing with the spears to get better at hunting. His kills of various smaller prey were evidence of that and had supplemented their foraging nicely.

What he did not say, however, was that he was not only hunting animals. He was hunting his fellow man. It had been some time since Korea, but his time on this island was rapidly teaching him the necessary movements to keep silent in motion. The principles were fairly similar in a jungle as in a forest, with the notable exception of more undergrowth to step on or get slowed by. In time, however, it was easy enough to notice the thicker patches before he reached them, and he had become quite good once more at assessing the terrain about him for tactical positioning and ambush locations. He had set up a series of traps in the foliage for hunting of both kinds, one in the deeper locations where animals roamed, one along the perimeter in locations where it would be easy for someone to approach their camp unnoticed.

Unfortunately, he could not lay traps along their main paths in and out without leading to questions he did not want to answer. It had become clear in his mind that Leo needed to go, that he was beyond help, and he did not want anyone sharing that burden on their conscience.

Thus it was that the direct approach was the one most unguarded, and the one he least expected a devious tactical mind to take. But perhaps an insane man was not devious, or had called double bluff, for Leo approached not from any secret direction but from their main path. Granted, he moved in stealth as best he could, but Cameron's plans were thrown by the simple fact that he could not protect the obvious and still maintain secrecy.

He was asleep in the hut near the door, when Leo came. He still slept lightly, so the small crackles of movement did nothing more than bring him into the lightest sleep one can be in without being awake. He would be up in the space of a heartbeat, however, if someone so much as gasped in proximity, spear in hand and lashed to his back. An uncomfortable way to sleep...but necessary.

The alarm shattered his pleasant dreams, and within two seconds he was on his feet, had readied his spears, and was outside the hut poised to attack. His eyes flicked, assessed the threat, and he hurled his first spear, reaching for another even as it flew.

For just a moment there Leo thought that Alex was going to come over to him but then she made a bunch of racket and sounded the alarm. The hurt look he gave her while she did it was full of sadness and loathing but he didn’t waste too much time on it, he was off and falling back into the forest in less than a few seconds. Leo was forced to face the reality of the situation, Alex was one of the enemy…he didn’t want it to be true but when the spears started flying at the spot he had just been it was hard to deny. Alex was helping them try to kill him and Liz, they had either tricked her into it or she had been in on it from the start.

Making his way back to Liz he was pleased to see that she was not panicking, though he was not so pleased to see the smug ‘I told you so’ look on her face. Leo should have known she would be right but it wasn’t his brain he had been thinking with when he came up with the plan to reveal himself to Alex. Leo was falling in love with Liz for sure but he was needing the company of an ADULT woman more and more every day.

“Yeah yeah, you can gloat about being right later…for now we have to get out of here. Come on, we have to be sure we go back the way we came so we don’t run into the traps.”

Oh yes, Leo and Liz knew all about the traps that someone had been setting for them. They were crude things designed to cause lots of damage and they only went to prove that the others were trying to kill them. Leo hoped that maybe the others would chase after them and stumble into their own traps in the dark. Leo hoped it would be that fool who kept throwing spears at him who fell into one of the traps and broke his fool arms, maybe that would stop him playing with sticks!

Full moon or not, the darkness of the night quickly proved to be in Leo's favor.

As Alex ran the distance between her post and the camp, zigging and zagging with precise knowledge of the terrain between, it was clear that Cameron had been the first from the tent, spear in hand and determination marking his facial features. Many a time, Alex had wondered if the man really ever truly slept.

But as the spear swished and arched through the air, the target just as quickly disappeared into the darkness.

Alex slowed her pace, the pounding of her heart echoing in her ears.

"Do you think you got him?" she questioned quietly, both dread and anxiety filling her emotions.

As the alarm rang, Elizabeth rose from where she was sleeping and moved to the doorway. Wonder filled her mind at what it could be to cause Alex to ring it. She caught glimpse of a person moving away as one of Cameron's spears landed in what was the place the person was. Leo, she thought to herself as she stepped outside the hut to the side. Leo was the only human, she knew Cameron would throw a spear at. Ever since their encounter with him and the little girl weeks ago, Elizabeth had noticed changes in Cameron but had not said anything until she had noticed how long he had disappeared into the jungle at times. Sighing, she turned and walked around the hut towards the path they took to the 'bathroom tree.' Her mind wandered slightly as she walked as a chill went down her spine. Besides the larger animals that lived in the thinker areas of the jungle, Leo was something she feared running into alone.
